The Daily Tweets 2010-11-11: NaNoWriMo write-in

Twitter Tools (a WordPress plugin) keeps on malfunctioning and posting the days tweets with the wrong date and several hours later than they’re supposed to be posted.  So I keep on having to come in & change the date, post name, etc.  It’s annoying.

But at least they finally post.

November 11, 2010: Veteran’s Day; and also Day 2 of the Alaska Division of Elections count of write-in ballots in the Alaska U.S. Senate election (or, in twitterspeak, #AKSen); and also a different kind of write-in: a NaNoWriMo write-in wherein crazy “write a novel in a month” writers gather together to drink coffee… and write!

All but one of the rest of the tweets are from the NaNoWriMo write-in, where I kicked some serious butt.

  • At Brayton @KaladiBrothers in Anchorage for another #NaNoWriMo write-in. I stand at 17,122 words, gonna see if I can get to 20K tonight. #fb #
  • Wow, 513 words in 15 minutes? I just won a #NaNoWriMo word war? How can this be? I usually at in the low 300s in that time! #fb #
  • 584 words that time. Good grief, what’s with me tonight? Not complaining, mind you. (but this time I got beat. that’s OK.) #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • Just 855 more words to 20K (& being again a full day ahead of the #NaNoWriMo game). #fb #
  • This 15 minute #NaNoWriMo produced the number of the beast: 666 words. Geez, I’m kicking ass tonight. #fb #
  • 2802 words so far tonight. Only 76 words away from 20K. Booyah! #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • #NaNoWriMo words since I got to Kaladi’s: 3452. Notw at 20,574 total. I rock. #fb #
  • RT: @audiocloud: Finally reading Siddhartha by Hermann Hess after a decade of “waiting.”// One of my favorite most influential-to-me books. #

The Daily Tweets 2010-11-10: #AKSen vote count proving it’s not “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” no matter what she calls her crappy reality show.

Tweetmap: Sarah Palin's Alaska

Today was the first day of counting write-in ballots in the Alaska U.S. Senate race, which is now (Scott McAdams having conceded) between incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowki, the write-in candidate, and Sarah Palin’s favorite Joe Miller.

Meantime, we’ve been hearing plenty about this Sunday’s premiere of Palin’s [un][sur]reality show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”.  The above screenshot is from the Washington Post‘s review of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”, which included an embedded of Alaskans’ Twitter tweets about the (un)reality show.

And there I am, and there’s the first few words of my tweet, the full test of which is included in the title of today’s post.

The day’s tweets:

Here’s a photo (taken February 4, 2010) of the fata morgana referred to in the post linked a few tweets up:

Fata morgana

This was taken from the taller of two Denali Towers in midtown Anchorage, showing downtown Anchorage with Mt. Foraker (left), Denali (middle), & fata morgana (right) in the background.  Fata morgana are optical illusions particularly common in polar or other cold regions: there really aren’t really any mountains north of Denali visible from Anchorage, except with fata morgana.

The Daily Tweets 2010-11-09: Microsoft Society for the Advancement of Some Stupid Font I Never Heard of Before

  • Why do virtually all of MS Word’s preloaded styles use stupid fonts & ugly colors that no intelligent person wants in their documents? #fb #

[On Facebook, a friend commented, “I blame it on the CSLF. The ‘Comic Sans Liberation Front.”

To which I replied, “Or the MSSFAOSSFINHOB. The Microsoft Society for the Advancement of Some Stupid Font I Never Heard of Before.”]

  • RT @techweenie: T-Party spprters in AK suddenly VERY interested in correct spelling – not on their own signs, but on others’ ballots. #AKSen #
  • AK Tea Partiers can’t even spell own candidates’ name correctly. Correct spelling is Joe Mil-LIAR. #

The Daily Tweets 2010-11-08: First snow

First snow at UAA

This was a “First snow at UAA” photo I took on October 26, 2006. Four years & change ago; but it’s much as the UAA/APU Consortium Library will look every morning on my way to work from here on out, until breakup next April or May.

(Except I won’t be going to work every morning in December. I’ll be in Australia, sweating. Heh.)

Here’s the day’s tweets:

  • Snow last night, lots of people running late today. #
  • RT: @APDInfo: Weather Driving Alert (Cont.) Please advise drivers to avoid hilly areas. 0000-0915 hrs – 34 accidents, 2 w/ injuries, 54 VIDs #
  • RT: @APDInfo: Weather Driving Alert – All Anch roads w/ hills, esp. downtown, midtown & hillside are treacherous due to extreme icing. #fb #

  • RT: @APDInfo: 11-8-10 Driving Alert (UPDATE) 00:00-15:00 hrs – 86 collisions, 4 injury collisions, 91 VIDs and this before evening commute! #
  • Joe Miller’s campaign slogan was modeled closely after Sarah Palin’s: “I’m a victim.” http://bit.ly/aL5FHQ #fb #

Winter arrives

View from my (office) window

Winter is finally acting like winter in Anchorage: we got a decent dump of snow overnight & this morning. What better proof of that than that almost everybody was late to work this morning?

Or, better yet, with a couple of pics?  I took these during my lunchtime while I nuked my lunch into warm edibility.

The pic above is a People Mover bus as seen through a corner of the UAA/APU Consortium Library as seen from my office in another part of the Consortium Library.  The green plants are inside the library. The ones with snow on them are not.  And there are reflections.  I think it looks pretty cool.  Or cold.  But it might be confusing to some eyes.

This view is a little more straightforward.  Or queerbackward. Whatever.  Anyway, it doesn’t mix the eye up as much.  It’s just as cold, but not as cool.

View from my (office) window

Happy winter, Anchorage!

The Daily Tweets 2010-11-06: A lovely NaNovember day (7.5K words)

NaNoWriMo participant 2010Saturdays are writing days for me. But in November, every day’s a writing day, thanks to NaNoWriMo  — National Novel Writing Month.  We’re now a week into NaNovember, as I call it, & I started it way behind.

But by the end of the day, with another 7,500 words written, I was ahead of the game.

I started at Side Street Espresso, my favorite writing venue.

  • At Side Street writing. Goal today: 7K words would bring me even in #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • Progress report: so far about 2K words of my 7K goal for today. #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • Was recently joined at Side Street by @nethenekhthon who is busily tapping away across the table from me now. in reply to nethenekhthon #

When Side Street closed at 3:00, we moved over to the downtown Kaladi Brothers in the corner of the PAC.

(Don’t worry, downtown coffee drinkers: Kaladi eventually got its key back.)

  • At 3.5K words for the day so far, halfway to my day’s goal of 7K. #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • 5K words today so far. About to go catch a bus, will see if I get another 2K tonight or not. #NaNoWriMo #fb #

I finished my writing day at home.

  • 6K words. just 1K to go tonight for #NaNoWriMo #fb #
  • Did it: met my goal, & then some. 7.5K words today, bringing me to 11,125 total #NaNoWriMo words (now a little ahead of the game). #fb #

The Daily Tweets 2010-11-05: Do we really need to set the clocks back on Sunday when we already set the country back on Tuesday?

  • 3049 words for #nanowrimo today, bringing me to 3609 total. Goal to get to 10K by Saturday (& hence where I should be.) #fb #
  • RT: @redrummy RT: @ricecracker79: Do we really need to set the clocks back on Sunday when we already set the country back on Tuesday? #fb #
  • RT: @Inked_Tigress: @yksin Wait, does that mean we gain an hour to sleep in? // Yeah, that’s the good thing about it. #

Blog changes, & NaNoWriMo

I got fed up with my old template, so I’m changing it.  If you’ve got respiratory issues, you might want to wear a mask, because I’m gonna be kicking up some dust around here.

But right now: I’m off to NaNoWriMo writing.  I’d better write a lot, I’m way behind!
