Whatever in hell I’ve been doing…

… it hasn’t been writing many posts on Henkimaa.  I haven’t even finished uploading my Australia pics, much less writing blog posts about that trip. Lately, just a dog attack, the Anthony Rollins case, automatically-generated Daily Tweets posts….

….yawwwwwnnnn….

I couldn’t find a photo of me actually yawning, but here’s one where I look sleepy and have my mouth open, so it’ll have to do:

Too sleepy to aim it right

I do have an excuse.

From their Minority Report precog pool, the precogs may be heard to be crying out, “That’s what they all say!” All the same, it’s true: I’ve been busy.

There’s my day job, of course.  That always prevents me from becoming a full-time pajama-clad blogger.

Bent Alaska, Alaska's LGBT blog

But also, as announced on January 30, I’ve taken on the role of co-administrator (as well as ongoing contributor), on Bent Alaska, Alaska’s LGBTA blog. In the past few weeks, this has meant moving Bent from its former platform on Blogger to WordPress, starting up a Facebook page to supplement Bent’s (more private) Facebook profile, and joining Bent to the Twitterverse as @bentalaska.  On top of that, my co-admin, E. Ross, has been out of town for the past month, and so all posting to Bent for the past several weeks has fallen to me, as was the case last November just before my own trip to Australia.  I’ll tell you, the amount of work involved in just staying up-to-date on news, events, and other stuff in or of interest to the LGBTA community is pretty much a full-time job in itself, much less actually writing posts about all of it — I congratulate E. Ross on all she’s done to keep Bent Alaska going all by herself these past three years.

Besides posting for Bent (all posts for the past month have physically been posted by me, regardless of actual authorship), I’ve also written a few posts there, some of which I do not crosspost here at Henkimaa. The interested can find them here.  Most recently, I’ve written about the Anchorage LGBT Discrimination Survey (published originally as an op-ed for the Anchorage Press), a Fairbanks fundraiser for gay cabbie injured in an assault, the death two weeks ago of PFLAG’s Chuck O’Connell, and the consideration by the University of Alaska Board of Regents — and ultimately the passage last week — of a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation on all University of Alaska campuses.

Side Street EspressoOn the writing side of things, I’m still making it my business to head over every Saturday to Side Street Espresso, which has been my favorite writing venue since 1994.  We’ve lately been joined regularly by my writing buddy Rob, who I met through the past couple years of NaNoWriMo, and his non-writerly-but-nonetheless-very-cool wife Karen.  We’ve also been making it over to a new writing venue for me — the Sugarspoon — which has lots of tasty desserts that I never eat because I’m prediabetic, but also has great quiche, great coffee, great free WiFi, and great hours (Tuesday-Sunday, 11 AM — 11 PM) that are well-suited to the writerly crowd.  That’s also where the Anchorage Write Club (@AKwriteclub) & the local NaNoWriMo group (@AnchorageNaNo) have lately been meeting to cafe-write together every Tuesday late-afternoon/evening.

ScrivenerAnd what have I been writing? Well, up until the last couple of weeks, not a heckuva lot, really.  What I’ve been doing instead is using a great new (to me) program called Scrivener to get my writing stuff sorted out.  Fellow NaNoer Abby told me about Scrivener at the tail end of NaNovember.  I visited Scrivener’s website — or rather, the company’s website, called Literature & Latte — where Scrivener is described as

a powerful content-generation tool for writers that allows you to concentrate on composing and structuring long and difficult documents.

Well, what could be longer and more difficult than the last four years of chaos — including passages of narrative spanning three centuries-plus of timeline; on-the-fly background notes & invention of a complex story universe; research notes; & occasional whinging about houseflies (mostly in 2009) — that I’ve written in my Cold/Long Dark story universe over the course of the last four years during & between NaNoWriMo’s?

So in early December, just before hopping aboard Delta 2223 for the first of my four flights between Anchorage & Brisbane, I bought & downloaded Scrivener to my desktop & laptop computers (both downloads on the same generous license!), & even started going through its well-designed tutorial during a few cafe-writing sessions with my BrizVegan friend Sian.  I finally completed the tutorial on my return, & spent most of my writing sessions on my return getting all my Cold/Long Dark material in order.  Let me tell you: Scrivener is all that it’s cracked up to be — & then some.  I intend (“They all say that!” cry the precogs) to put together a longer review of this magnificent application soon.

And then — yes.  I began to write again.  At the moment, I’m working on material from a storyline called “Arrest” featuring Louava Solà, who came to Earth as a “data trader” at a Consensus embassy in Vancouver (B.C.) after a childhood & youth at an orbital station around the Saturn’s moon Titan. Whaddaya reckon?

(Meantime, a story finished in the wee hours of November 1 featuring Esti Gusev, born in a really yucky Martian religious community, has been accepted for publication, but I’m constrained to be pretty mysterious about it otherwise.)

(It occurs to me that I seem to have pretty good luck with stuff completed on November 1.)

I anticipate being taken away from writing “my” stuff, at least somewhat, by upcoming work on the Anchorage LGBT Discrimination Survey. Scrivener should come in handy for that, too.  Important stuff… but I can’t help feeling ambivalent, given how good it feels to be running around in a science fiction universe again.

If I had time to write more Henkimaa posts, what would I write? Well, actually, I intend (“They all —!” — there’s those damn precogs again, STFU!) to actually write some.  There’s uploading my Australia pics & writing about my trip.  There’s stuff I’ve been thinking about restorative justice, partly in relation to the Anthony Rollins case.  And I’m still thinking a lot (& still thinking a lot about writing about) the form of governance I learned about last year, sociocracy, which amongst other things has helped me to better understand the governance of my fictional Cold/Long Dark society called the Consensus.  And I want to write more about writing & what I’m writing about.  And then I have a friend who’s saying, could you post more of your poems, please?

I’ll see what I can do.

But that’s what I’ve been doing.

Making a face (085/365)

There was some good news today, but there was also some pretty shitty news.  That, on top of not getting enough to eat today, made me feel pretty damned aggro.  As is evident in just a few of my tweets (& my Facebook wall).

Dog Whisperer needed

We need the Dog Whisperer.

Not for this dog —

Kimmie, injured

— but for the two dogs that did that to him. And their owner.

This is the second time my friend Marcia’s dog Kimmee has been attacked by her neighbor’s dogs.

All three dogs were on leashes, but both of the attacking dogs were (1) larger than Kimmee; (2) on extendable leashes that were fully extended, leaving their owner with little control over them; (3) even with proper leashes, too large and strong for their owner to control both of them at the same time to begin with.

And this is the second time.  The other dogs’ owner should know better.  Marcia had taken Kimmee outside for a poo, and suddenly around the corner came here came the neighbor dogs at the ends of their leashes, their owner obviously not paying a great deal of attention to what her dogs might encounter out of her sight, running ahead of her as they were.  Even though she knew her dogs had attacked Kimmie just a few months’ previous, to the tune of over $300 in veterinary care.  This time was worse (& the vet’s bill reflects it).

The photo heading this post was taken at the vet’s (Diamond Animal Hospital), where we took him for treatment, after Marcia had already cleaned up a lot of blood and washed Kimmee’s wounds with Betadyne against infection. Luckily I usually have my camera with me, so I could take a few photos to document his injuries in case the other owner tries to evade responsibility.

Here’s a close-up of his throat, where the worst injury was. Even with Kimmee’s fur in the way, you can see how deeply the puncture wound went.

Kimmie's throat, where the deepest puncture wound was

Here it is after he was treated, with some kind of gizmo (can’t remember what it’s called, & the paperwork’s with Marcia) to help keep it clean & draining. Luckily the bite from whichever dog got Kimmee by the throat didn’t go all the way to his trachea, or Kimmee might not still be alive.

Kimmie's throat after treatment, still draining

The other worst injury was to his right back leg and the loin area right in front of it. His hair disguised a lot of it —

Kimmie's leg & loin area before shave & treatment

Leg & loin area before shave & treatment

Kimmie's leg & loin area after shave & treatment

After treatment

— but after it was shaved so the vet could clean it, you can see all the puncture wounds from a pretty strong bite, right down into the muscle.  Kimmee’s going to be pretty damn sore.

There were a number of smaller wounds as well. Here’s the top of his head and ear, pre-treatment —

Kimmie's ear

— and post-treatment.

Kimmie, post-treatment

By the end of the evening, Kimmee — dripping blood from draining wounds, sore from his numerous bites, and logy from anasthesia — was pretty damn miserable: not at all the happy ebullient dog that I’m used to seeing.

Kimmie, post-treatment

I’m pretty angry.  All of this could have been avoided, had the neighbor actually cared enough to take proper care for her dogs and to ensure that they not be a danger to others around them.

The vet’s bill to care for Kimmee’s numerous injuries last night, and for antibiotics and pain meds while he heals, came to $470. Marcia’s got a limited income, so it came off my credit card.  We’ll be billing the attacking dogs’ owner. And I, along with everyone else including the vet, are encouraging Marcia to report the attack to Animal Control.

A full set of Kimmee photos are in my Flickr photostream.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Kimmee.

A note about the dogs involved

Kimmee is a pit or bulldog mix, we’re not sure exactly: he was an orphan on the streets when Marcia took him in.  Both his attackers were pit bulls.  I’m not a big dog person, but I had a coworker years ago who was a great lover of pit bulls, and I think it’s a great breed.  But as the vet said to us last night, pit bulls were bred aggressive — to fight other dogs — and if you don’t want them to be aggressive with other dogs, you’ve got to teach, train, & socialize them from puppyhood.  I’m pretty certain that’s not how Kimmie’s attackers were raised.  Like I said, Dog Whisperer needed. Needed also: neglectful owner — who reportedly also leaves her dogs alone all day in her apartment to bark bark bark all day — given one hell of a big reality check.

Rollins trial, day 12: Jury hears closing arguments

Nesbett Courthouse, Alaska Court System

The trial in Case No. 3AN-09-07868CR, State of Alaska v. Rollins, is being heard before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip R. Volland. Today, closing arguments from the prosecution and the defense were heard, and the case went to the jury.

My tweets today were a mix of Rollins trial & Valentine’s Day.  Today in Anchorage Superior Court, closing arguments were heard in the case, and then it went to the jury.  We might hear a verdict as early as Tuesday.  As has been the case through most of the trial,  Grace Jang and photographer Ken Fankhauser of KTVA Channel 11 were in the courtroom livetweeting.  (Eventually KTVA’s Twitter feed even got Fankhauser’s Twitter name spelled correctly.) See their Twitter feeds for a full account of the day’s events, or read/watch media coverage (links posted at the bottom of the post).  Casey Grove of the Anchorage Daily News has also been doing some find reporting on this case.

Closing arguments were made for the state by Deputy District Attorney Sharon Marshall, for the defense by Fairbanks attorney Susan Carney.  An excerpt from Casey Grove’s ADN piece on today’s events:

Marshall [for the state] at one point focused on Rollins’ position of authority.

She said one of the women, in her statement, spoke for all of the alleged victims regarding their feelings toward the officer.

” ‘He has so much power, he could cause problems for me,’ ” said Marshall, reading the woman’s words projected on a screen in court.

“When somebody stands in front of you with a badge and a gun, you’re supposed to respect that,” Marshall said. “He’s on official duty every time this happens.”

Turning to face Rollins later, Marshall raised her voice almost to a shout, saying he was so arrogant he thought his alleged victim wouldn’t go to police.

“This was all soft, subtle power abuse, situational force,” Marshall said.

Carney [defense attorney] said Rollins loved being an officer.

“He was handsome, a dashing figure in his uniform,” Carney said.

Carney implored the jurors to look at each case separately.

“It’s a credibility contest,” Carney said. “It is literally a ‘she said, he said’ situation.”

Which drew this comment from ADN reader Just_Sayin2011:

No, that statement is wrong. The correct statement is:

“It is literally a ‘she said, she said, she said, she said, she said, AND she said vs he said’ situation.”

(I made a similar comment in my tweets.)

Late in the day, Matthew Felling of KTVA tweeted,

That’s where I’ll be looking.

Rollins trial, day 11: Rollins claims he’s a sinner, but not a rapist

Nesbett Courthouse, Alaska Court System

The trial in Case No. 3AN-09-07868CR, State of Alaska v. Rollins, is being heard before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip R. Volland. The case will go to the jury on Monday, Feb. 14, after closing arguments from the prosecution and the defense.

Today in court, cross-examination of Anthony Rollins, the former Anchorage Police Department officer accused of serial rape while on the job, concluded. Rollins continued to claim that any sexual contact he had with alleged victims was consensual in nature. Rther than a rapist, he claimed he was an adulterer who had violated his marital oath:

I made some bad choices, I’m sorry I sinned against my god and against my family, and I’m, I’m sorry. I let a lot of people down.

As KTVA Channel 11 summarized its story on the day’s proceedings (video at the bottom of this post),

As a married man and former Anchorage police officer, Anthony Rollins took two oaths both of which he admits on the stand to violating.

Those oaths were his marital oath and his oath as an Anchorage police officer. Rollins took a third oath on the witness stand to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. By denying that he sexually assaulted his accusers, did he violate a third oath as well? That’s the implication Deputy District Attorney Sharon Marshall left us with as she concluded cross-examination.

Rollins testimony was followed by the state calling back to the stand an APD officer who clarified on proper police procedure on how DUI’s are booked & processed, the proper use of APSIN (Alaska Public Safety Information Network) record checks, etc.

Judge Volland then told the jury he needed to meet with counsel (both defense & prosecution) on jury instructions. Final arguments will be heard on Monday, 14 February. 14 jurors have sat through the trial; 2 will be dismissed and deliberations will begin with 12 jurors on Monday after final arguments.

Rollins trial, day 10: Rollins takes the stand

Nesbett Courthouse, Alaska Court System

The trial in Case No. 3AN-09-07868CR, State of Alaska v. Rollins, is being heard before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip R. Volland in the Nesbett Courthouse at 4th & I in Anchorage.

Wednesday, February 9  at the trial of Anthony Rollins: before a packed courtroom, the ex-Anchorage Police Department officer accused of serial rape while on-duty took the stand in his own defense.

Cross-examination by the prosecution is expected to resume on Thursday morning.  Yesterday I created a Twitter list of people who are in the courtroom livetweeting the trial: go to http://twitter.com/#!/list/yksin/rollins to follow.  So far, the list includes @GraceJangKTVA & @photogfank of KTVA Channel 11 News and @CarolynHallKTUU & @RebeccaPalsha of KTUU Channel 2 News.

Also Wednesday, my blog post of February 2, “Why I’m following the trial of alleged serial rapist Anthony Rollins”was crossposted as a “Voices from the Flats” feature at The Mudflats. The Mudflats gets a good deal more traffic & discussion than Henkimaa does, and there was some good discussion there yesterday.  I made some comments there too, including my summary of Rollins’ defense strategy:

Rollins’ defense goes like this: “I had sexual relations with other women outside my marriage, which was wrong, & I did so while on duty, which was wrong, but I didn’t sexually assault any of the women: they came on to me, at least two of them told me I was ‘cute’ [he testified that this morning about victims 1 & 2], & sex that we had was consensual. So while guilty of betraying my marital vows and of doing so while on the clock, I am not guilty of these crimes I’m charged with.”

Per the tweets from KTVA & KTUU journos in the courtroom, Rollins’ victims & their family members hearing his testimony are very agitated about his testimony — shaking heads, rolling eyes, tears, anger, upset. APD officers in courtroom near one journo also agitated. Analysis: they believe he’s lying. Well, so do I.

My later summary as the trial recessed:

Trial recessed just before 1:00 PM Alaska time & will continue tomorrow. The D.A. questioned Rollins about three so far of his accusers. I tell you that it’s pretty hard just to read the tweets; I can’t imagine how much harder it must have been for victims & their family members to sit in court & listen to Rollins claim that he took a 24-year-old DUI suspect in pajamas in handcuffs to a police substation, calling her mother to let her know where he was, & then proceeding to have sex with her from behind — where he was the one to pull down her pants — was “consensual” & was “invited” by her.

That’s the kind of stuff people have been hearing him say today.

D.A. also questioned him about how many women he’s had sex with outside marriage since he married his wife (also an APD officer) in 1987. “I don’t know. More than once.” He apparently regards his contacts with these young women who were under his police authority as being “affairs.”

One’s gorge rises.

Rollins trial, day 9: State rests its case, defense calls first witnesses

Nesbett Courthouse, Alaska Court System

The trial in Case No. 3AN-09-07868CR, State of Alaska v. Rollins, is being heard before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip R. Volland in the Nesbett Courthouse at 4th & I in Anchorage. Today the state rested its case; the defense called its first witnesses.

Once again the trial of Anthony Rollins — the former Anchorage Police Department cop accused of serial rape — was livetweeted by Grace Jang and photographer Ken Fankhauser of KTVA Channel 11 News. Once again, I didn’t do much retweeting, so see their Twitter feeds for complete coverage.

Tweets from the courtroom indicated that the courtroom got pretty crowded today as the day the state called its last witness & rested its case, and the defense began calling its own witnesses.  Spectators apparently hoped that Rollins himself would testify today; but the defense announced that while he would be testifying tomorrow instead.  But the court heard from three witnesses called by the defense, by my count.  Two were Anchorage police officers who had worked with Rollins — and who didn’t seem to do much for the defense other than to establish that in fact there are other APD officers who know Rollins — and a corrections officer from the Anchorage jail who gave testimony about the behavior of so-called “Victim 1” when she was brought to the jail on DUI charges.

Expect a crowded courtroom tomorrow for people eager to hear what Rollins has to say for himself on the witness stand.
