A note from the Men’s Club: The Last Frontier Men’s Club has dropped it’s membership fee. The club recognizes that during difficult economic times it maybe challenging to some of our members to pay dues, so we have decided to go dues-free. But we are still a members club, and you must submit a membership to be an official part of the club. This membership helps us verify that members are over 21, are male, and are currently living in Alaska.

Half Naked Pictionary is another Men’s Club event, happening on the 1st Wednesday of every month, at Mad Myrna’s from 9-11 p.m. Come have fun with half naked men this Wednesday! Hosted by Men’s Club President Tom.

Memorials for Nicole Blizzard, tonight & Jan 31

Memorials for Nicole Blizzard, tonight & Jan 31

Nicole Blizzard of Anchorage passed away on Dec. 30, and a memorial service is being held tonight, Thursday Jan. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in Providence Hospital’s West Auditorium. Blizzard was an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Providence.

The queer community is planning a second memorial later this month at Mad Myrna’s. Blizzard asked for a party instead of a funeral, so her friends are throwing a Birthday Party Celebration of Nicole’s Life at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday Jan. 31, which would have been her 52nd birthday.

In December, she was dealing with health problems and developed complications. Her close friends were with her when she passed away. They will spread her ashes in Cook Inlet this spring, as she requested.

Blizzard founded The Naked Ptarmigan, an LGBT literary journal for Alaska. She was a former editor of The NorthView, a former board member of Identity, and a co-host of RAW’s Celebration of Change.

She loved music, photography and writing, wrote online book and music reviews, and contributed to the web site TechnoDyke. A new book of her writings, Love and Other Mishaps: An Accidental Anthology, was published in early December, and autographed copies are available in the Local Interest section of Border’s Bookstore in Anchorage.

RAW is considering a last issue of The Naked Ptarmigan in honor of Nicole, and may set up a scholarship named for her. Details will be announced on March 27 at Celebration of Change.

Condolences to her friends and family. She was well-known and will be missed.

Please Help Captain Kaos get a New Leg

Friday, 16 October 2009 – 12:07 PM | Comments Off on Please Help Captain Kaos get a New Leg
Please Help Captain Kaos get a New Leg
Captain Kaos needs our help! Kaos, a.k.a. Kevin Bohall, is a karaoke performer and ex-security guard at Mad Myrna’s. He lost his right leg below the knee this summer and can’t drive or work until he gets a prosthetic leg. Social Security and public assistance turned him down, so Laurie Branstiter is collecting donations and throwing a benefit Pirate Karaoke party at Myrna’s on October 22 to help Kevin get his leg.
This is Kevin’s story, as told to Bent Alaska by Laurie:
“Kevin lost his right foot and partial leg to diabetes in June 2009. He was working for a local landscaping company when he developed a blister on his right foot. His employer wouldn’t allow anyone time off during the ‘busy season’ without 3 weeks notice. Kevin didn’t realize his diabetes had flared up again and his body couldn’t fight the diabetes and the infection in his foot. It soon turned gangrene. He was lucky and it is a “BKA” (below knee amputation).”
“Kevin had just started his dream job as a truck driver for Klondike Cement. But without a right foot, he cannot drive. He doesn’t consider himself ‘disabled’ and is anxious to get back to work.”
“We applied for Social Security Disability – denied and on appeal; State of Alaska Public Assistance and Unemployment – denied; Love, Inc. has given us food and we are on waiting list for rent assistance; Limbs for Life has been contacted and he’s on a waiting list.”
“I have been supporting Kevin, my 15-year old son and myself since June. We are $4000 behind in rent and utilities. Kevin has a couple of credit cards that we haven’t been able to pay on.”
“Kevin loves to perform karaoke at Myrna’s. He uses the name Capt. Kaos as his stage name. It is actually a character (played by Dom Deluise) in Cannonball Run, one of Kevin’s favorite movies.”
Kevin and Laurie are active allies in the Mad Myrna’s community and held a fundraiser there last year for diabetes and the Cancer Association.
Their friends are stepping forward to help. Marsha Brannan is giving $8 from every $12.50 fleece neck warmer she sells to the Kevin Bohall Prosthetic Fund. The neck warmers are available in solid black, cream, red, or blue and can be shipped anywhere in the United States. Email Marsha to order.
Despite the roadblocks, Laurie is hopeful. “Thank you and God Bless each of you for taking the time to read about Kevin.”
Donations can be made to the Kevin Bohall Prosthetic Fundraiser account at First National Bank Alaska. Donations will also be accepted at the door during the Pirate Karaoke party at Myrna’s, 8 p.m. on October 22. Please email Laurie to help with the party.

Dinner is the first of four great shows

Friday, 25 September 2009 – 1:13 AM | One Comment
Dinner is the first of four great shows

We have four excellent LGBT-related shows this week in Anchorage, one a night from Friday through Monday:

(1) The True Diversity Dinner at the Snow Goose, 7 p.m. on Friday

Not impressed by the Mayor’s no-gays-need-apply “Unity” Dinner with a highly paid GOP-fundraising keynote speaker at the one hotel being boycotted by the unions? Then join us Friday evening with True Diversity speakers and awards, plus music, food and dancing, two blocks down 3rd Avenue at the Snow Goose. Speakers and performers include Assemblywoman Elvi Gray-Jackson, Diane Benson, Shannyn Moore, Steven Alvarez, Reverend Marquita Pierre, and the Yup’ik Dance troupe Masingka. Please support diversity by donating to this event at the True Diversity Dinner web site.

(2) “Hedwig and The Angry Inch” on Saturday, 7 & 11 p.m at Mad Myrna’s

The cult fave “Hedwig” is coming to Anchorage in a live performance starring Atz Lee Kilcher (who opened for his sister’s concert in August) and a full band. The Homer shows were awesome, we can’t wait to see it at Myrna’s. Tickets are $20. Call for reservations (907) 276-9762.

(3) The Imperial Court’s Investitures on Sunday, 6 p.m. at Mad Myrna’s

The ICOAA cordially invites you to Investitures for the 37th Reign, hosted by Denali Emperor 37 Kevin and Aurora Empress 37 Miss MeMe. $10 includes a show with all the current title holders and a buffet. Join the ICOAA and have fun all year.

(4) The Lion Sings Tonight on Monday, 7 p.m. at Mad Myrna’s

“The Lion King” is playing at the Performing Arts Center and the cast will perform a one-night-only cabaret at Mad Myrna’s to benefit the Four A’s and Broadway Cares. Tickets are $20, call (907) 263-2046.
