It’s a KRISTARA double-header in Fairbanks this weekend for Valentine’s Day, with both events benefiting Interior Alaska causes: the Interior AIDS Association (Friday’s event) and the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living (Saturday’s event, sponsored by the Imperial Court of All Alaska).

The main annual events held by the LGBT organizations and local communities in Alaska are listed here in calendar order, along with city-wide events that we participate in every year.

Fur Rondy Grand Parade (Feb 26) – The Imperial Court creates a float for the Rondy Parade in downtown Anchorage.

Femme Fatale (mid-April) – The Imperial Court’s Juneau show closes the state legislative session and is a benefit for Four A’s.

Day of Silence (April 15) and Pride Prom (April 23 in Anchorage) – Alaska’s students, teachers and Gay/Straight Alliances (GSA’s) join the National Day of Silence, and break their silence celebrating at Pride Prom.

Celebration of Change (April 23) – Radical Arts for Women’s ‘break-up’ performance celebrates women, music and art in Anchorage.

Juneau Pride Chorus spring concert (April 30) – The concert is a spirited evening of women, song and dance at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center, and the chorus performs at various events during the spring and summer.

LGBT Pride Picnic (May 30, Memorial Day) – The Anchorage Picnic and BBQ celebrate unity in the community and the beginning of summer.

Alaska Pride Week and Festival (3rd week in June) – The summer solstice parade and festival celebrates LGBT Pride in downtown Anchorage, following a week of Pride events.

Northern Exposure (during Pride Week this year) – Alaska’s new gay & straight BDSM/Leather conference returns for a second year.

Juneau Pride Picnic and Glacier Hike (summer) – Juneau celebrates Pride with a GLBT community picnic and glacier hike organized by SEAGLA.

Marching in July 4th Parades – LGBT contingents design floats and march in July 4th parades in Anchorage and Homer.

PFLAG in Golden Days Parade (late July) and Tanana Valley State Fair (August) – PFLAG and the Fairbanks LGBTQA community march in the annual Gold Rush parade, host a Pride Picnic after the parade, and create a booth for the Interior state fair.

Coronation (Labor Day Weekend, Sept.) – An extravaganza of performances in Anchorage invests the new Emperor and Empress of the Imperial Court of All Alaska, and announces community awards and scholarships.

Pride Conference (Saturday near October 11) – Identity’s back-to-school youth conference is inspired by National Coming Out Day, celebrated nationally on October 11.

Alaskans Together annual meeting (Sunday after Pride Conference) – The state-wide LGBT advocacy group holds a strategy meeting each year in Anchorage.

Thanksgiving Community Meal (Thanksgiving Day) – Several gay-owned businesses in Anchorage host a Thanksgiving Day meal for the LGBT community.

World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) – Alaska commemorates World AIDS Day with red ribbons and candlelight vigils sponsored by Four A’s and IAA in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

Arctic Heat (Jan. 2012) – The Men’s Club chooses the new Bear and Leather titleholders every other year.

World AIDS Day events in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau

World AIDS DayWorld AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1 to remember those we have lost to HIV/AIDS, to honor those still living with the disease, and to commemorate the theme of universal access and human rights.

Events including candlelight vigils are scheduled in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. Click through on the city names to RSVP organizers about your intentions to attend.

Anchorage

  • Info: Join us for our annual World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil to remember and honor all who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Vigil begins at 6 p.m. then afterward at 7 p.m. there will be a free showing of the movie “Life Support” starring Queen Latifah.

Fairbanks

  • Info: December 1, 2010 Potluck, art, and open house from 4-5:30pm at the Interior AIDS Association. Candlelight walk at 5:30 from IAA 710 3rd Avenue to the Morris Thompson Cultural Center Theatre 101 Dunkel Street. We will have Anna Nelson, executive director of IAA opening and guest speaker Dr. Saltonstall from Anchorage and Father Scott from St. Matthews Episcopal Church. Other speakers TBA. Everyone is welcome to bring a dish to share for the potluck and don’t forget to dress warmly for the walk. Remember, this is Fairbanks and it will probably be cold!

Juneau

Three upcoming events from the Interior AIDS Association!

This Friday, November 19th, join us at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge in the Binkley Room for the 2nd Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction fundraiser – sponsored by the UAF Pre-Med Society. Tickets are available at Gulliver’s Books and at IAA. You can also buy them on line on the IAA website – www.interioraids.org. See details on the Events page. Students: $15, Adults $20, Couples $35. $25 at the door.

Wednesday, December 1st is World AIDS Day. Meet at IAA for a potluck and preview of First Friday artwork from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Then, we will do our traditional candlelight walk from IAA to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor’s Center (15-20 minute walk). The program will begin at about 6:00 pm in the Theater. Our featured speaker is Dr. Elizabeth Saltonstall, MD. She is the HIV expert in Alaska!

Friday, December 3rd is IAA’s official first First Friday. Join us at 710 3rd Ave from 6-8pm. Several local artists will be displaying their work. There is also some parking in the back (709 2nd ave. – across from Gambardella’s).

Denali Moose Scat Race benefits Interior AIDS
The annual Moose Scat Scoot in Denali National Park is on June 26 at 5 p.m. and this year all proceeds from the race go to benefit the Interior AIDS Association!
Prizes for race winners and top fundraisers include flightseeing, rafting and a variety of tours. Register at Riley Creek Mercantile, near the entrance to Denali National Park, between 2-4pm. Buses leave at 4:45 to take participants to the race start.
ARAMARK parks and resorts is kicking off their season with the annual Moose Scat Scoot Race. Thanks to the community’s previous donations and assistance, our staff can continue to bring various recreational and social events to Denali. The goal of this event is to raise funds for the Interior Alaska AIDS Association.
This year’s Moose Scat Scoot will take place on Saturday, June 26, 2010 inside Denali Park. The race consists of a half marathon bike/run, 5k run/walk, and a 1/2 mile fun run/walk. There will be an entry fee of $25 for each runner, with sponsorships to raise money for the Alaskan Interior AIDS Association.
We hope that you will consider donating items to provide us assistance with prizes and merchandise that will go toward participants and winners, as well as helping provide friendly benefits for the community. Your contributions will be one huge asset to the race and any donation will go directly to the Interior Alaska AIDS Association.
For further consideration, any business which is able to provide prizes and items in the amount of $200.00 or more will have the benefit of displaying their business’ name screen-printed on the back of the event T-shirt.
Please contact Patty Burns at Aramark to donate items for the Moose Scat Scoot 2010 and to make contributions to the Scoot/IAA fund.
The day after the race is National HIV Testing Day. Get tested at IAA on Sunday June 27 from 2-5pm, or on June 28-July 2 from 9am-5pm. Testing is also available at the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center, Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, and Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest. Take the Test, Take Control! Eat good food at Dining Out For Life in Fairbanks and enjoy great singing at the Wizard of Oz Cast and Crew Cabaret in Anchorage to raise funds for people with HIV/AIDS in Alaska. Both events are on Thursday, April 29th.
Dining Out For Life – Fairbanks
Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at select restaurants as a benefit for Interior AIDS Association in Fairbanks. The restaurants are Lu Lu’s Bread and Bagels for breakfast, Ivory Jack’s for lunch from 11am to 5pm, Bobby’s Downtown for dinner, and Lavelle’s Bistro for dinner. Addresses and phone numbers HERE.
Dining Out For Life: Dine Out, Fight AIDS” is an annual fundraising event where local restaurants donate a portion of proceeds to area AIDS agencies. IAA also participated in Dining Out last year. Over 55 cities in the United States and Canada are involved in DOFL this year.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road – Anchorage
Supporters of Four A’s get a special treat Thursday night: stay up late and Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a cabaret performance by the Wizard of Oz cast and crew! The show begins at 11 p.m. at Mad Myrna’s and the suggested minimum donation is $15 a person. All the proceeds will directly benefit HIV positive individuals and HIV prevention efforts in Alaska. Tickets will be sold only at the door.
This is not the first time Four A’s has convinced cast members of a Broadway show to perform a cabaret benefit while on tour in Anchorage. Last year, cast members of The Lion King sang a wonderful show called The Lion Sings Tonight, which sold out.

Alaska observes World AIDS Day
Today, Dec 1, is World AIDS Day and Alaskans will remember those lost to HIV/AIDS, and honor those living with HIV/AIDS, by holding candlelight vigils in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, and by wearing red ribbons.

“Universal Access and Human Rights” is the 2009 theme for World AIDS Day, “doing everything we can to support countries to reach their universal access goals for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support – all the while protecting and promoting human rights,” said UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé.
Unaids.org reports that there are currently 33.4 million people worldwide infected with HIV and 2 million of those are children. Last year saw nearly 2.7 million new cases of HIV.
To help HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in Alaska, make donations to Four A’s (southcental and southeast) and IAA (interior), and visit Four A’s for the list of locations in Anchorage and Juneau that have a paint can full of free Red Ribbons.

Anchorage:
Join Four A’s for the annual World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil, at 6 p.m. in the UAA Wolf’s Den (Student Union/Bookstore Building). Four A’s also co-presented the documentary “Sex Positive” with the Bear Tooth on Monday night as a World AIDS Day event.
Juneau:
Join Four A’s for the Juneau World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil at 6:30 p.m. in the Baranof Hotel. Four A’s is also sponsoring a free showing of “Life Support” on Wednesday, December 2 at the Gold Town Nickolodean Theater at 8 p.m.
Fairbanks:
Join Interior Aids Association for a World AIDS Day Walk and Vigil on Tuesday, Dec 1. Meet at IAA at 5:30 p.m. for a Candle Light Walk to First United Methodist, 915 2nd Ave. and a service and potluck at 6 p.m.
Homer:
HIV testing is available today and every day without an appointment at Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic. Red ribbons are located at KBFPC, K-Bay Caffe & Two Sisters.

PFLAG in the Golden Days Parade
Fairbanks PFLAG invites the LGBTA community to walk together in the Golden Days Grand Parade on July 25, starting at the Carlson Center and carrying the large rainbow flag from Key West. Let’s show Fairbanks our pride! PFLAG will also have a booth at the Tanana Valley State Fair in August.
Adam & Steve seeks Program Assistant
Adam N Steve, an Mpowerment Program in Anchorage, is seeking a Program Assistant to help coordinate a multi-level intervention HIV prevention program aimed at men who have sex with men, with an emphasis on community building and empowerment activities among gay and bisexual men ages 18-29.
