Out North Theater Gallery in Anchorage is looking for entries to add voice to an exhibit that showed in Soldotna in April. “Celebrate” is not a rant, but rather a celebration of the small steps forward the LGBT community has made recently.

Rainbow Highway with PFLAG and SEAGLA 5/8
PFLAG and SEAGLA have collaborated for years to take care of the most beautiful 2 mile segment of highway in Juneau, right along Auke Lake. This year’s community cleanup is on Saturday, May 8. Bags and gloves are provided, please show up at 10 AM at the Auke Lake parking lot. Wear bright colored clothing so we can put a rainbow of color on the highway that morning. Contact

You are invited to join the Fairbanks LGBTA community on May 1 for an afternoon of Kentucky Derby, mint juleps, a little touch of Southern fabulousness and horse racing, all for a good cause.
We’ll have mimosas and two different types of mint juleps, plus snack food. Everything else is bring your own. We also have contests: wear the most fabulous hat imaginable and win a prize. Every attendee will have $100 of “play money” to bet on the actual horse race. The Derby will be on at 2 p.m. Alaska time, and we’ll have a TV set on so we can watch the action. Whoever wins the most money wins the fabulous Kentucky Derby pie generously donated by Erica Iseri. Of course, for those who lose the most, we have our traditional bottle of Kentucky Bourbon as a consolation prize.
The
Kentucky Derby Party is a fund raiser for Alaskans Together for Equality, Inc., Alaska’s only statewise LGBTQ civil rights organization. There is a suggested donation at the door of $10-$25, and we will also be offering a 50-50 raffle, among other things, to raise money for this worthwhile cause. The suggested donation is not a requirement to get in. There will be plenty of information about
Alaskans Together at the party.
The Derby party is on Saturday, May 1 from 12:30pm-3:30pm at the Cafe Alex building, 310 1st Avenue Fairbanks Alaska. Ages 21 and over only, please (this was a requirement to use the space.)

Four A’s get a special treat Thursday night: stay up late and Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a cabaret performance by the
Wizard of Oz cast and crew! The show begins at 11 p.m. at
Mad Myrna’s and the suggested minimum donation is $15 a person. All the proceeds will directly benefit HIV positive individuals and HIV prevention efforts in Alaska. Tickets will be sold only at the door.
This is not the first time Four A’s has convinced cast members of a Broadway show to perform a cabaret benefit while on tour in Anchorage. Last year, cast members of The Lion King sang a wonderful show called
The Lion Sings Tonight, which sold out.

Get ready for summer by planning PFLAG’s entries in the Golden Days Parade and Tanana Valley State Fair, then party, party, party to raise money for Fairbanks PFLAG, the Imperial Court, and Alaskans Together.
PFLAG plans for Fair and Parade 4/18, 4 p.m.
This year’s Tanana Valley State Fair theme is “Barn in the USA.” PFLAG will be planning our Golden Days Parade theme and entry for mid-July at our next meeting, on Sunday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
Fairbanks PFLAG meets on the third Sunday of the month at 814 6th Ave.

Shh! Friday April 16 is
Day of Silence, when students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. At the end of DoS, Alaska students Break the Silence in Anchorage at the Pride Prom, in Fairbanks with a group scream and Drag Show, and in Juneau at an after-party with the Juneau Pride Chorus.
Hundreds of thousands of students of all beliefs, backgrounds and sexual orientations participate in national Day of Silence to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Founded in 1996, DoS has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
DoS occurs during Prom season, and same sex prom dates have been in the news more than usual this year. Some gay and lesbian teens in Alaska go to their school prom with a same sex date, but most don’t. They would rather go to an LGBTA prom where they don’t have to worry about the kind of anti-gay bullying that Day of Silence highlights. In Anchorage, students break the silence of DoS with the annual Pride Prom.

Day of Silence is a positive educational experience, but the bigots are in full attack mode. A
fake medical group sent anti-gay propaganda to schools around the country to stop DoS. Faux News riled up the tea party protesters by claiming that DoS was wasting tax payer money, although school funds are not spent. Several anti-gay groups tell parents to keep their teens out of school on Day of Silence because they might
hear see that many of their peers oppose their anti-gay bigotry. (They’re often the kids who need to see it the most.) On the Monday following DoS, these kids are told to preach at school the dangerous lie that gay kids should be ashamed of themselves and should pray-away-the-gay, or at least pretend to be straight. And, no, they are not silent about pushing an anti-gay religious agenda in the public schools.
