2012 Alaska Run For Women — Saturday, June 9
Join 7,200+ women of all ages for 1 or 5 miles, walking or running, for the 20th Alaska Run for Women. This, the largest women’s run in the U.S., will take place in Anchorage on Saturday, June 9 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon.
It’ll be a busy day for many women and girls who will first participate in the Alaska Run for Women and then go on to Anchorage’s Celebrating Diversity Parade and Alaska Pride Fest on the Park Strip.
The mission of the Alaska Run for Women is:
To raise money for and awareness of breast cancer and women’s health, and to showcase the talents of Alaska’s women athletes.
The first Alaska Run for Women event was held in 1993 and drew 700 participants. It’s now one of the most visible running events in the state, and one of the largest all-women runs in the country. In 19 years, the event has generated nearly $3 million in cash and donated mammograms, all of which has been distributed to organizations associated with breast cancer. The donated mammograms are given to low-income women through a program administered by a local non-profit.
After reaching a record high 7,231 participants in 2011, the Alaska Run for Women continues to aim high for its special 20th year. As the Run grows so too does the grant fund — helping to support Alaska’s women with breast cancer detection, outreach, education, awareness and research.
