The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls

The Topp Twins: Untouchable GirlsThe Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls is a 2010 New Zealand documentary directed by Leanne Pooley and winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls tells the story of the world’s only comedic, singing, yodeling lesbian twin sisters, Lynda and Jools Topp, whose political activism and unique brand of entertainment has helped change New Zealand’s social landscape. The Topp Twins break down barriers as often as they break into song, and in the process, they have become well-loved cultural icons.

The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls is a big story. It’s not just the story of two sisters but also of 50 years of New Zealand history. Half a century of cultural changes and the foundation of a national identity. Part concept film, part biopic, part historical record, part comedy and part musical extravaganza, the Twins share their journey from coming out to Jools’ recent brush with breast cancer with much laughter, honesty and wisdom. It’s a hilarious, toe-tapping and ultimately touching film about two truly unique New Zealanders which ends up saying as much about us as it does about them.

“Their story, as told by Pooley, also is a touching and quietly meaningful one, built around themes of tolerance, self-acceptance and unconditional love.” — Mike Scott, New Orleans Times-Picayune

Making the Boys

Making the BoysMaking the Boys is a 2010 U.S. documentary directed by Crayton Robey.

Before Prop 8, Milk or Will & Grace, before the AIDS epidemic, gay pride parades or the Stonewall uprising, The Boys in the Band changed everything. Making the Boys explores the drama, struggle and enduring legacy of the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience. Beloved by some for breaking new ground, and condemned by others for reinforcing gay stereotypes, The Boys in the Band (created by Mart Crowley — talented writer, hard-partying scene-maker and best friend of Hollywood starlet Natalie Wood) sparked heated controversy that still exists four decades later. Featuring anecdotes from the surviving cast and filmmakers, as well as perspectives by legendary figures from stage and screen, Making the Boys traces the behind-the-scenes drama and lasting legacy of this cultural milestone.

Featuring interviews with Edward Albee, Dominick Dunne, William Friedkin, Larry Kramer, Tony Kushner, Terrence McNally, Dan Savage and more!

“CRITICS PICK…Captivating documentary about the creation of, and reaction to, the breakthrough play The Boys in the Band.” — Neil Genzlinger , New York Times
