This weekend in LGBTQ Alaska (5/20/11), as we await the End Times
This weekend is just about as packed as last weekend in LGBTQ Alaska. Events include the third annual Black Rubber Ball in Fairbanks, two more shows of Mad Myrna’s production of Tommy (extended by popular demand); Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie at Out North, special cool things at a couple of Anchorage’s drag shows, some great kick back and listen music with Ever Ready at Anchorage Moose Lodge, and what can only be called — yes, because that’s what they told us it was called — a ShiTTy Sunday ShoW.
(Assuming, that is, that the world doesn’t end by then. But, as I’ve been saying, I’m sure that just as she’s done so many times before, Buffy will avert the Apocalypse. We just have to hope she doesn’t avert the Rapture as well.)
For further details on any of these events, go to our Alaska LGBTQ events page, and click on the event you’re interested in on the calendar. There you’ll find all the details, including date, time, location, cost, and links to where you can get further information.
Anchorage area
- The Family at University of Alaska Anchorage holds its biweekly summer meeting at the UAA/APU Consortium Library.
- Integrity, the Episcopal GLBT advocacy group, holds its monthly potluck and worship service at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Waldron Hall.
- The Who’s Tommy is at Mad Myrna’s for another Friday and Saturday night, 7:00 PM shows only. The show was supposed to have ended last weekend, but it was extended by popular demand. Perhaps the great review it got in last week’s Anchorage Press had something to do with it? But this time… it really is the show’s last weekend — so if you ignored my advice last week not to miss it, well, this time, really don’t miss it!
- At Out North: The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams plays through May 22. Hmmm… May 22… why, that’s this Sunday! That means it’s this show’s last weekend too. Come see this great play, and support all the fine work Out North has done & continues to do for the arts in Anchorage — not to mention the LGBTQ community.
- Drag is always special, but it’s extra special this week. (1) Enraptured by the Rapture, and the End Times van that’s been driving around Anchorage advertising the imminent mystical teleportation to a better place of a soon-to-be-heavenly host of people we will all just Really Really (Really Not!) Miss, Mad Myrna’s Friday Night Diva Variety Show has elected to send off the Elect in fine style with a Bon Voyage Believers Party. Party like it’s 1999!…. (2) Over at the Crazy Horse, Miss Diedra of Illusions of Delusion hopes to have large crowds of people to celebrate her birthday with her. Happy Birthday, Miss Diedra!…. (3) Kodiak Bar & Grill will also hold its regular Saturday night performance of the Lip Gloss Review.
- Ever Ready will be playing two nights at the Anchorage Moose Lodge. (And heads-up: Ever Ready “Light” will be playing this coming Tuesday at Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria in South Anchorage. It’s Char’s last gig, so get over there and listen, and have some great pizza, too!)
- The ShiTTy Sunday SHow — oh damn. We just really don’t know why it’s ShiTTy. Maybe it’s out of disappointment that Ms Alaska Leather, Riley Roo Bar and NE2.0 missed the Rapture van? But no: we want them here! And with live stage acts, free food, no cover charge, & door prizes — it can’t be all ShiTTy.
Fairbanks
- Black Rubber Ball III. It’ll be a really kinky night in at least one part of Fairbanks Friday night, with the third annual offering of burlesque, great music, and good food and drink in a wild and DS/BDSM-friendly environment.
Juneau
- SEAGLA Friday Social at the Goldbelt Hotel.
Is your event not on our calendar? No matter where you are in the state, if you’re running an event of interest to the LGBT community, we’d be glad to put it on our calendar. Learn how to get the news to us by reading all about our new & improved Bent Alaska events calendar.
It’s the End Times for this post. We celebrate with Blondie’s “Rapture.” h/t Christopher, who cautions us: Look out for the Man from Mars this weekend.
